So, I am so punchy and wired at this point that I'm breaking my personal rules and looking at fanfic at work and...the XMMFF archive? Has pairings categories for Charles/Erik and Erik/John. Well and good. But there's no listing for Erik/Mystique!

The hell? It's not a slash archive. And Erik/Mystique is a canonical relationship.

I do not understand fandom. Except in the way that I totally predicted that people would prefer Magneto to Xavier, and tend to hate Xavier and treat him like a fascist. When it comes to good and evil, fans are tediously predictable.

Ah, but there will be, once I get your story in there. :)

And maybe it will get others thinking about the pairing. While I'm happy to archive any pairing (and stories w/o pairings), I personally would like to read about the dynamics of many different relationships--both sexual and non-sexual.

I've wondered sometimes if the fact that Sir Ian is gay hasn't influenced the Magneto pairings in XMM. But then I remind myself that slashers see slash no matter what, and I decide that has nothing to do with it.

There are a few Erik/Mystique stories (Spyke Raven wrote a couple after X1) and I've seen more coming out post-X2. I think that many people aren't quite sure what to *do* with the pairing, however. Magneto and Xavier have a wonderfully complex friend/enemy relationship on screen (and in the comics) and Pyro and Magneto have the master/apprentice dynamic to play with. Mystique and Magneto relate to each other in a way it's harder to dramatise on the page because the conventions are less well established. I would like to see more writers try.

This happens far less often in movie fandom than in comic fandom. In fact, I haven't noticed in in movieverse stories much at all, although my standards for comparison may have been skewed by arriving in X-Men comicfic in 1997. Badly done Evil!Xavier isn't nearly as pervasive as he once was, at least outside Ultimate or Evolution fic.

Oh, and while I'm commenting: thank you for reccing my story. I appreciate it very much.

DD: Sorry; I do know the archivist can't archive what hasn't been written! It just seemed odd to me that there weren't any other stories out there.

Andraste: my pleasure!
