Huh. Denis O'Hare, who played the schizophrenic lawyer so movingly in the L&O episode "Pro Se," also played the guy who brutally attacked an insane homeless man living in his neighborhood in an episode two years earlier ("Volunteers"). I wonder if there's a story there.

If it's the one I'm thinking of, didn't he also play a white supremicist in another episode? They brought him back so many times I thought they were going to give him a recurring part. Their bringing back talented actors repeatedly was something I always admired about L&O.

Yes, it's the same guy. He's got a fairly good Broadway success going just now, I hear. I just wonder if there's some reason that pair of scripts drew him.

Well, that's assuming he was in any real position (financially speaking) to pick and choose what roles to take. I looked him up on imdb and he was in a fourth episode I had forgotten about, but his first appearance ("Volunteers") in 1993 seems to be early in his tv career. I'd like to think that he wowed TPTB so much with his performance that whenever they wrote a really compelling character they automatically thought of him. He always brought dignity to the characters, which in the case of the racist he portrayed, was quite amazing. He seems to be fairly fearless as an actor.
