I suspect this is because, down deep, I am a hopeless romantic. No, hold on. Just think about it. How strong would Ethan's love for Giles have to be to not only survive, but still matter so much after all this time? How fundamentally important would Clark have to be to Lex for him to always, always regard him as central in his life, even as he shifted from friend to hated rival? That's the love that lasts forever, man. One might even dare to say it's the love of soulmates, if even thinking about the word didn't give me the heaves.

Plus, you just get a whole lot more drama that way.
